APAN WGs Highlights

Disaster Mitigation WG

Chair: Eric Yen (ASGC, TW), Co-Chair: Veerachai Tanpipat (HII, TH), Franz A. de Leon (ASTI, PH).

Disaster Mitigation Working Group (DMWG) was initiated by the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) of the Philippines, Hydro Informatics Institute (HII) in Thailand and Academia Sinica Grid Computing Centre (ASGC) in Taiwan in 2014. The primary goal of DMWG is building capacity of disaster management, based on the common vision of the sustainability of the humanity and the Earth. According to the case study-based deeper understanding approach, DMWG is developing best practices and computational risk analysis knowledge by use cases of various types of hazards in different Asia countries. These outcomes keep evolving along with growth of case studies and shared resources. Through the APAN collaboration platform, DMWG has been federating partners from 12 APAN members, sharing more than 20 case studies of 6 types of hazards (tsunami, typhoon and extreme weather, storm surge, flood, forest fire/smoke/haze, and lightning) in close cooperation with related projects such as Asi@Connect funded deeper Understanding to Natural Disaster project as well as EU-funded EOSC-Hub and EGI-ACE projects. Apart from case study sharing, training, workshop, master class and collaborations are the usual events coordinated by the DMWG in every APAN meeting in the past 8 years.

Case study approach is the major driver of DMWG in pursuing the capacity building synergy. Working together with APAN Agriculture Working Group, Open and Sharing Data Working group, and Cloud Working Group etc. has been underway. In the long run, DMWG is enhancing the open collaboration platform for the sharing of knowledge, data, tools, and experiences from case studies as well as for regional collaborations on hazard risk reduction.
