MYREN UPDATES

My name is Mohd Noh Jasmani and I am representing Malaysian Research and Education Network (MYREN) as the head of MYREN NOC. I have been assuming the position and thus leading the MYREN NOC operation team since June 2020 after replacing Mr. Sharizan Sumuii who is the predecessor head of MYREN NOC.

It is imperative to inform that MYREN Network Sdn Bhd (MNSB) has been mandated by the Malaysian of Higher Education (MOHE) to manage MYREN operation on behalf of the government since April 2018. MNSB is essentially a public university company as it is a subsidiary of UITM Holdings Sdn Bhd which in turn is wholly owned by the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UITM). Mr. Mohd Nasrul Khairi is currently the Chief Executive Officer of MNSB.

With regards to research work activities among MYREN community, the researchers from MYREN members are actively involved in the international collaborative research work. Recently two participants from MYREN community have been selected by the Asi@Connect to receive research grants under the Call for Proposal 5 project. The successful participants are both researchers from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) with different research disciplines notably IT and biology. Up to date there are altogether 13 participants from MYREN community who have been selected by Asi@Connect to receive research grants since the start of Call for Proposal 1 project in 2016.

On international collaboration activities, MYREN is presently an active partner of two of projects namely ‘Joint IPv6 Research Project Group’ and ‘Collaborative BGP Routing Analyzing and Diagnosing Platform’. Both collaborative projects are formed by more than 13 countries and numerous international research organizations.

On MYREN infrastructure development status, the recent rapid rise of online learning activities in Malaysia during the Covid-19 pandemic period has significantly increased the demand of bandwidth in the MYREN community. The drastic increase of bandwidth utilization has caused network congestion in large percentage of the institutions. As such it has become one of MYREN’s major missions to resolve this network congestion issue and hopefully MYREN will be able to upgrade the core and access infrastructure to accommodate the surging demand of bandwidth in the coming years.

APAN has been contributing excellent support to Malaysian research and education growth over the years. MYREN would like to see more training workshops and technology conferences arranged and organized for Malaysian network engineers in the future especially in the security and networking fields.
